Blogging for Business - How personal should you be in your posts? When does it make sense to add personality to a post and when does it not?
As it said in our homework, how personal you should be depends on the type of business you are representing and whose business your are posting about. If it is a large business or you have been hired to post on behalf of a business then you should not be personal. If your business is a sole proprietor, or you are a photographer, or singer, something along those, then I feel not only is it okay to be personal, but it may be beneficial. Readers like to know the story behind the song or the photo or the piece of art. For our business, construction, I think we have a bit of truth to personal and non personal. I feel there are times when it will be okay to be personal and times when we need to just be factual and professional, not that you shouldn't alway be professional even when personal. Say we are posting about kitchen counter top material types and the benefits of each type, I feel we stay factual, keep it to the information. On the other hand if we post a picture of a kitchen we have remodeled and zone in on the counter top, we could go personal and say why we chose the type of counter top with the design of the cabinets. Both personal and non personal posts in our blogs, is how I see ours.
Hi Bobbi,
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting on my recent blog post. There is a certain knack to selling kitchen and bathroom remodels. It requires design sense, spacial understanding and budgeting all wrapped up into one can-do person. I think the trick is closing to client every step of the way--everyday, until the completion check arrives. Meaning, you have to communicate well and often to make it work for a client who generally doesn't see the solution until it all comes together in the end (and what a ride that can be if it gets away from you).
Hi Bobbi,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that in some cases it is beneficial to be more personal. I think that there is a big difference between being personal and showing personality. Some industries lend themselves better to showing personality though. However, I think it is absolutely possible to show a good deal of personality without being too personal.

I agree with your post that it is alright to be personal if your business is a sole proprietor, photographer, singer, etc. Readers do like to hear about how a song is written or someones influence behind doing what they do. I feel it's what keeps readers coming back.
